For many of us, crafting began with love for yarn. A beautiful shade, a soft fiber or the feeling of handmade bliss, yarn is more than a crafting material, it’s emotion. The skein of yarn: soft, colorful, full of promise, inspired us to pick knitting needles, a crochet hook or a punch needle tool.
Sometimes it’s the magical feel of the skein, or the thrill of exploring the color possibilities, or the excitement of creating something, yarn love is the common thread (pun absolutely intended) that ties us all together.
Celebrating the love for yarn is the annual I Love Yarn Day. Held on the second Saturday of October, it is a day that yarn lovers, DIY makers, knitters, crocheters and more come together to honor crafting.
If you are thinking of joining the celebrations, we’ve got you covered. Here are some creative ways to honor the day and your favorite craft. But pick your yarns first.
Why I Love Yarn Day Matters
It’s more than a day on the calendar, at least for knitters and crocheters. Started in 2011 by Craft Yarn Council (CYC), a non-profit organization made up of leading companies and professionals in the yarn industry. It was established to be the day to promote the joy of yarn craft by bringing together fiber artists, yarn companies, and retailers. From encouraging new crafters to pick up needles or hooks to promoting the health benefits of crafting to introducing the slow fashion of making by hand, it’s a day that reminds us that even a humble yarn can spark endless creativity.

Join the Celebration
This I Love Yarn Day, pick up your favorite skein and let your creativity flow.
1. Start Something New or finish a long-pending project
Honor the day and begin something new. Start with a stash-busting blanket or scarf. If you’ve got the skills, a pair of socks to contribute towards Socktober, or are planning your own holiday gifts, is a good starting point. If you have something pending lying in your closet, bringing you shame, now is the time to dust off the project and get it done.
2. Honor Your Stash and Get it Sorted
The leftover yarn from previous projects is precious and what better way to celebrate with scraps. Before planning what to do with it, sort out the stash. Begin by pampering your yarn and winding your yarn the right way. Place the scraps on an umbrella swift and then rewind it into cakes and center pull in balls so that you begin crafting directly.
3. Teach Someone New
Fun and practical, celebrate the reason why I love yarn day was established. Encourage beginners by teaching someone new. Lend them your needles or hook and teach them to make something with yarn. Take a new knitter or crocheter under your wing and take them through the nitty-gritties.
4. Share your love on social media
Lastly, the fun remains incomplete if you don’t share. Show off your projects on social media or even your local clubs. Follow your favorite designers or yarn brands; you may get some inspiration and even some exciting surprises.
The idea of the yarn is to get together and enjoy crafting. Whether it’s by participating in a class to learn something new or teach, or simply enjoying their favorite craft, a very happy I Love Yarn Day!
