Free Baby Yoda Knit Hat Pattern: Grogu-Approved and Beginner Friendly

A long time ago, in a craft room not so far away, someone looked at a tiny green alien with enormous ears and said, "I could make that". And honestly? Correct decision. Iconic choice. No notes.

The Star Wars universe has deeply inspired the knitting and crochet community, blending the "nerdy" passion for fandom with the meditative art of fiber crafts. This craze, which often peaks around May the 4th, casts on spells on knitting needles and crochet hooks to create complex amigurumi, garments, and artistic home decor.

If there is one character who has captured the collective heart of the fiber arts world more than any other, it is the small, wrinkled, soup-stealing, Force-wielding creature formerly known as Baby Yoda and officially known as Grogu. He is ancient, he is wise, and now, thanks to this pattern, he can also be a baby hat.

Why Baby Yoda Is Pure Crafting Joy

Think about it. Baby Yoda, with enormous eyes, a round, squishy silhouette, ears that jut out at a structurally improbable angle, and a color palette that is basically "sage green with a cream underside," is designed by someone who secretly crochets. The moment he first appeared on screen in The Mandalorian, knitters and crocheters couldn’t wait to make the squishy being, as eager as to bring in bundles of squishy yarn.

What You Need to Summon This Hat Into Existence

Yarn: Symfonie Viva DK in Sage (main color) and Himalayan Salt (ears)

Knitting Needles: US 4 / 3.5mm, 16-inch circular needles

Gauge: 18 stitches and 18 rows = 2 inches in rib stitch, knitted in the round

Notions: Tapestry needle, stitch marker

Size: Fits babies 3 to 6 months, with a 12 to 14 inch head circumference. The finished hat measures approximately 12 inches around.

The Pattern: From Cast-On to May the Force Be With You

Hat Body

Using your circular needles, cast on 100 stitches. Join in the round, place your marker, and knit every round until the hat measures approximately 5 inches from the cast-on edge. That is it. No complicated stitch patterns, no color changes, just meditative rounds of ribbing.

Crown Shaping

Here is where the hat transforms from tube to dome. Work the following shaping rounds:

  1. Round 1: (K1, P1, K1, P1, K1, P1, K1, P1, K2tog) repeat to marker
  2. Round 2: Knit
  3. Round 3: (K1, P1, K1, P1, K1, P1, K1, P2tog) repeat to marker
  4. Round 4: Knit
  5. Round 5: (K1, P1, K1, P1, K1, P1, K2tog) repeat to marker
  6. Round 6: Knit
  7. Round 7: (K1, P1, K1, P1, K1, P2tog) repeat to marker
  8. Round 8: (K1, P1, K1, P1, K2tog) repeat to marker
  9. Round 9: (K1, P1, K1, P2tog) repeat to marker

Cut your yarn leaving at least a 7-inch tail. Thread through remaining stitches with your tapestry needle, pull tightly to close, and weave in ends. The hat is now a hat. A Grogu-shaped destiny awaits.

The Ears: The Main Event

Now for the part everyone is really here for. Make 4 ear panels in total: 2 in Sage and 2 in Himalayan Salt.

Cast on 11 stitches and divide evenly among 2 needles.

Join in the round and place marker.

Cut yarn leaving at least a 10 inch tail.

Using a tapestry needle, join 2 pannels of each colour and thread through remaining stitches. Weave in ends.

Repeat to make the second ear.

At this point, attach the ears to each side of the hat approximately half an inch above the rolled brim using a length of yarn and your tapestry needle.
